Fun with genealogy

On a trip to Ellis Island with friends visiting from Nebraska, I learned the following: when my great-grandfather left Ukraine, the children he left behind (my grandfather and his younger brother, who would join him in Brooklyn little over a decade later) were aged one and negative one.

Granted, many people at that time and place didn't always know how old they were; my grandmother, for example, was never sure whether she was born in 1917, 1918, or 1920. But I'd prefer to believe I just uncovered a fascinating ninety-year-old family secret, of course.

Being a tourist in my own city, I took only one photograph today:
