ETS Invokes The Name In Vain

Sorry about the bright light; this was posted right under a ceiling light in one of the classrooms in which I teach.

For the uninitiated, ETS is the nonprofit (::clears throat violently::) organization that administers the SAT and GRE (::rackets::) exams to high school and college students.

Freshman composition teachers tear their hair out trying to remind students that first drafts always suck, which is why they need to invest time in revising essays, and be wiling to do radical revision, totally reorganizing papers before editing at the sentence/grammar/style level. Some grammar and style issues will automatically improve after revision at the idea level; spelling/grammar/sentence structure should come after idea-level revision.

I'm going to write a fake "student" essay that engages the critical thinking errors that many freshman comp students make, and pay ETS $2.49 to see what it does with said essay. Stay tuned.
