National Constitution Center and ... Amway???
At the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, a museum which definitely skews a bit Reagan:
Me: This place is weird.
SigOther: It's not *that* weird. They do have an exhibit that praises the New Deal.
Me: And one that suggests the House of Representatives would vote 418 to 17 in favor of a rather awful imaginary bill.
[here we briefly debate whether one can, as a registered Democrat, conscientiously vote for McCain and believe he's simply the better candidate; I say maybe, if this were a different election and weren't immediately post-Bush.]
SigOther: So you'd vote for Mickey Mouse if he were the Democratic candidate?
Me: This election, probably ... "Richard and Helen DeVos Exhibition Hall"? Where have I seen that name before?
[beat]
SigOther: Amway.
Me: What?
SigOther: He's the founder of AMWAY.
Me: The biggest, most cult-like multi-level marketing scheme/scam ever?
SigOther: Yep.
Apparently, back in the mid '90s, Amway was picking on college students, and two of SigOther's friends got swept up in it. It's interesting that Amway claims to be about All-American free-market capitalism yet requires participants to recruit their own competitors.
In any case, the Amway connection exponentially raised the museum's creepiness factor ...

Yep, amway reps can be creepy. They all look and talk alike. They try to scam college students into an "easy" business. It really ticks me off when the shysters tell tehse students that amway is more important than their education.

And yet did any of the stationary exhibits actually move PR?

Squib,
No, that would have made the museum even creepier. Illinois is known as the state with the most animatronic historical figures (usually Abe Lincoln) in their museums, according to a friend who is a native Illinoisian.

Amway. De Vos. Van Andel. Quixtar. Alticor. Upline. If you see any of these names or words, be afraid. Be very afraid. Run as far away as you can!
I'm glad I did.
